Stay Safe on Ladders

Falls from elevated surfaces rank consistently among the top 10 causes of workplace accidents, particularly in industries like transportation and warehousing, where work locations vary. Many of these incidents can be attributed to a failure to follow basic ladder safety protocols. To help prevent ladder-related injuries, regardless of your work setting, practicing the following safety guidelines is essential.

Safe Setup white and blue truck on road during daytime

Keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Ensure you select the appropriate ladder for the task, considering the length and duty rating. The ladder should extend at least 3 feet above the roofline or working surface.
  2. Before each use, inspect the ladder for any loose or damaged components, including steps, rungs, spreaders, rung dogs, safety feet, and other parts.
  3. Clear the area where you intend to work. Never position a ladder in front of an unlocked, unblocked, or unguarded door or front of equipment that could potentially move.
  4. Opt for a wooden or fiberglass ladder near power lines or electrical equipment, as metal ladders conduct electricity.
  5. Ensure all locks on extension ladders are correctly engaged before placing the ladder on a stable surface. The ground should be level and firm, but if it's uneven or soft, you can use large, flat wooden boards braced under the ladder to level it. Straight, single, or extension ladders should be set up at an approximate 75-degree angle.
  6. Employ the 1:4 ratio for ladder safety. Position the ladder's base 1 foot away from the supporting structure for every 4 feet of vertical height.

Exercise Caution

Keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Always exercise caution when using a ladder and avoid using it for any purpose other than its intended use. Additional safety considerations include:
  2. Ensure that the combined weight of the user and any materials being carried does not exceed the ladder's maximum load rating. Only one person should be on the ladder at a time.
  3. Keep your body centered between the ladder's rails and avoid leaning excessively to either side while working. Never overreach; descend from the ladder and reposition it as necessary.
  4. Avoid stepping on the top step or bucket shelf or attempting to climb or stand on the rear section of a stepladder.
  5. Always face the ladder when ascending or descending, and leave a raised ladder in sight.
  6. If you feel dizzy or tired, descend the ladder slowly and safely.
  7. Wear non-slip footwear whenever you are on a ladder. Adhering to these safety and prevention tips can minimize ladder accidents and promote a safer working environment.
